Innovation & Design Challenge – Energy-Efficient Mechanical Prototype

Regulations and Rules

1. Event Objective

The Innovation & Design Challenge aims to encourage students to develop energy-efficient mechanical solutions addressing real-world sustainability challenges. Participants will design and present functional prototypes or 3D simulations focusing on energy conservation, renewable energy, or automation.

2. Theme

Energy-Efficient Mechanical Systems

Examples include (but are not limited to):

  • Solar-powered vehicles or mechanisms
  • Automated waste segregation systems
  • Energy-saving mechanical devices
  • Renewable energy-based mechanical solutions
  • Sustainable automation concepts

3. Eligibility

  • Open to B.Tech students of FISAT
  • Inter-disciplinary teams are allowed.
  • Each participant can be part of only one team.

4. Team Composition

  • Team size: 1 to 4 members
  • One team leader must be designated.
  • All members need not belong to the same branch.

5. Design & Development Platform

Participants must use any one of the following platforms:

  • SolidWorks
  • CATIA
  • AutoCAD

(Other software is not permitted unless prior approval is obtained from the organizers.)

6. Expected Deliverables

Each team must submit and present:

A. Design Output (Mandatory)

Either: A detailed 3D simulation/model with motion study

B. Supporting Materials

  • 3D model files
  • Assembly drawings (if applicable)
  • Exploded view and working animation
  • Brief technical description (problem statement, working principle, advantages)

7. Submission Guidelines

  • All files must be submitted on or before the deadline.
  • File formats accepted: .SLDPRT, .SLDASM, .CATPART, .CATPRODUCT; PDF for documentation.
  • Late submissions will not be accepted.
  • Teams must ensure files are virus-free and readable.

8. Presentation & Demonstration

Each team will be given:

  • 5–7 minutes for presentation
  • 3–5 minutes for Q&A

Prototype teams must demonstrate safe and proper working. Simulation teams must show:

  • Assembly motion
  • Functional operation
  • Energy-efficiency aspects

9. Evaluation Criteria

Projects will be judged based on:

Criteria Weightage
Innovation & Creativity25%
Energy Efficiency & Sustainability25%
Technical Feasibility20%
Design Quality & Modelling Accuracy15%
Presentation & Explanation15%

10. Rules & Code of Conduct

  • The design must be original. Plagiarism will lead to immediate disqualification.
  • Previously published or commercially available designs are not allowed.
  • Unsafe or hazardous designs will not be permitted.
  • Participants must maintain professional conduct throughout the event.
  • Judges' decision will be final and binding.

11. Intellectual Property

  • Intellectual property rights remain with the participants.
  • Organizers reserve the right to use project images/videos for academic and promotional purposes.

12. Disqualification Criteria

A team may be disqualified if:

  • False information is provided
  • Plagiarism is detected
  • Rules are violated
  • Misconduct occurs during the event

13. General Instructions

  • Participants can bring their own laptops with suitable design software or can use the system and software available at the NSDC laboratory.
  • Internet access may be limited during the event.
  • Organizers reserve the right to modify rules if necessary.
